A Hand Opening and Closing
The most common interface device in the CAVE is known as a "wand" - essentially a mouse, but in three dimensions. The wand is something in between a mouse and an interface glove. It's fairly unobtrusive and easy to handle, but requires the same sort of metaphorical layer as a mouse interface. Interface and interaction design in the desktop, GUI metaphor has a well established history, vocabulary, and set of uniform conventions. In VR, however, these conventions and vocabularies are less defined and far less universally known. Much of what we know already from the desktop metaphor can be extended to VR - many of the basic actions are very similar:- selecting an entity
- picking up, moving, and dropping an entity
- putting an item on top of or inside another entity
- examining an entity
- transforming, editing, and altering an entity
- deleting an entity
